Which 2003 Corolla is it?
A passenger's airbag was added to the Conquest after the 2003 facelift. Ask for the build date.
Ask the seller: "Is this the standard 1.8 litre or the Sportivo, and is it an automatic or a manual?"
1.8L petrol (1ZZ-FE) 1ZZ-FE
Engine code 1ZZ-FE · 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual
- 4 cylinders, in sedan, wagon and hatch
- Listings show 92 kW and 100 kW versions
- The automatic is the A245E
1.8L petrol (2ZZ-GE, Sportivo) 2ZZ-GE
Engine code 2ZZ-GE · 6-speed manual
- Sportivo hatch only
- 141 kW, and it takes 95 RON premium petrol
- 6-speed manual only, no automatic shown
Safety rating
We found no ANCAP page for this model. The sources we found disagree on the star count, so we give none. The Sportivo lists 2 airbags and ABS (brakes that help stop the wheels locking) with EBD (brakes that share the push between the wheels). Ask the seller which airbags this car has.
The big-money items
You can’t see inside these parts, but you can ask about them.
Engine oil use and wear 1ZZ-FE ENGINE, BUILT BEFORE ABOUT 2005
$$$ (over $2,000)Some pages say these engines can use more oil as the piston rings wear. Piston rings seal the gap around each piston.
Ask: "Does the engine need topping up with oil between services, and can I see the oil change records?"
Sportivo engine care 2ZZ-GE ENGINE, SPORTIVO HATCH ONLY
$$$ (over $2,000)This is a high-revving performance engine. We found no page listing faults, so ask about its care.
Ask: "Can I see the service history and the oil change records?"
Automatic gearbox A245E 4-SPEED AUTOMATIC, WITH THE 1.8 PETROL
$$ ($500 to $2,000)Pages say old gearbox fluid can lead to gear change problems. Shift solenoids are small electric valves that pick the gear. One page lists a Toyota bulletin about a whistle or hoot.
Ask: "Has the automatic fluid ever been changed, and does it change gear smoothly?"
Timing chain tensioner and cover leaks 1ZZ-FE ENGINE
$$ ($500 to $2,000)The timing chain links the top and bottom of the engine. A page says oil can leak from the tensioner, which keeps the chain tight.
Ask: "Has there ever been an oil leak at the front of the engine, and was it fixed?"
Airbag recall work ZZE122 AND ZZE123 COROLLAS, 2003 TO 2005
$ (under $500)Two airbag recalls cover these years, and one is a Takata recall. The work is free if a recall applies. The government notice says to arrange replacement.
Ask: "Has the airbag recall work been done, and can I see proof?"

Has the airbag recall work been done on this car?

Good answer: Hardly ever, and the logbook shows regular oil changes.
Why: Some 1.8 engines from this time are reported to use oil.
If it is an automatic, has the fluid been changed, and does it change gear smoothly?
Good answer: Yes, the change is recorded, and there are no jerks or whistles.
Why: Pages say old fluid is a common cause of gearbox problems.
Words you might see on an invoice
- Shift solenoid
- A small electric valve that tells the automatic when to change gear.
- Timing chain tensioner
- The part that keeps the engine's timing chain tight.
- Valve cover gasket
- A seal on top of the engine. It can leak oil.
- Drive belt tensioner
- Keeps the belt for the extras tight. A noisy one squeaks.
- Mass airflow sensor
- Measures the air going into the engine. A dirty one can cause stalling.
- Airbag inflator
- The part that inflates the airbag. It is the part the recalls are about.
