What to Check Before You Buy

Where do I find the VIN?
  • The compliance plate, a small metal plate usually in the engine bay or on a door pillar.
  • The base of the windscreen on the driver's side, readable from outside the car.
  • The registration papers, or the online registration record.
  • The seller's advertisement or paperwork. Ask them for it.

A VIN has 17 letters and numbers and never uses the letters I, O or Q. Some older imports have a shorter chassis number instead. The one on the car should match the paperwork.
